Any ACC fans (or college basketball fans who love great games) should check it out.

College basketball has actually improved, I believe, after the NBA instituted an age limit, effectively putting all of the potential pro players into the college ranks for at least one year. While a ton of sports talking heads have claimed this idea to be stupid, I think it’s actually weeded a lot of players out who thought they were going to go straight to the pro game. All it takes is one season in college to see who really might be ready to move up.

At any rate, the college game is still fantastic basketball and the ACC is one of, if not the best, conference tournament.

Virginia Tech has started making some noise in the ACC, and should no longer just be considered a football school. A tough team that plays a hard-nosed style of basketball, the Hokies come to play every time they hit the floor.

This year the Super Bowl is in Tampa, (which most people who don’t live in Florida mistakenly refer to as Tampa Bay), a city with a long history prior to the Glazers of bad football and great Super Bowls. The city might have a better football team, but their ability to throw a Super Bowl bash hasn’t changed, and the Ravens Cardinals Super Bowl should be awesome.

The Super Bowl is an American institution that hasn’t lost it’s luster, and it’s one event where you don’t have old-timers walking around talking about how much better it ‘used to be’. It’s no question that the NFL is playing great football, and the athletes today would be stars in ANY era.

Jonas Brothers tickets are still available from ticket brokers, so even if you’re being told the concert is sold out, don’t believe it, and you can still get a good deal on the tickets. Ticket brokers aren’t going to charge crazy prices for all the open seats, because some seats would go unsold they charged too much.

So the Panthers went to work, getting the offensive line players they needed to protect Jake Delhomme, coming off of elbow surgery, and to run the ball the way that John Fox wanted. John Fox’s most successful teams were able to pound away for yards on the ground consistently, and he obviously felt that he needed to get the team back to that style in order for the Panthers to find their way back into the playoffs.

Gone was DeShawn Foster, a player who had shared the backfield with power runner Stephen Davis during the Panthers’ last successful run and had been tagged as the heir apparent to carry the bulk of the rushing attempts after Davis’s departure. Foster was a back with a lot of promise, but after getting a few seasons of being the primary ball carrier, the Panthers obviously felt that Foster and DeAngelo Williams, the third year running back out of Memphis who spelled Foster at time, weren’t ever going to materialize into a power running game.

Enter Jonathan Stewart, a solid bruiser of a running back coming out of Oregon and fitting right into the style that the Panthers wanted, and combined with Williams and the revamped offensive line, have developed into the premier rushing attack in the NFL.

As the season rushes headlong into the postseason, it’s little doubt now that the Panthers will indeed return to the playoffs, but after a few mid season games in which the Panthers looked vulnerable, now they appear to be a team that’s looking like a serious Super Bowl contender.

I think it’s a great time of year to start a sports blog, with pro football, college basketball and pro basketball all going strong already. The NFL playoffs are just around the corner, so here we go! Sundays are hard to split between the pro football games and the college basketball games…well, heck, the entire weekend and Monday night are difficult, too. Decisions have to be made on what sports to watch. It’s not a bad problem to have.

This past weekend I watched a game between the Carolina Panthers and the Green Bay Packers, and I think that the Packers are a little better than their record while the Panthers are a little worse. I still am not sure if the Panthers are for real, but at 9-3, you have to consider them a strong contender for the playoffs at this point and the game against the Tampa Bay Bucs next week is looming very large.
